More than a year ago we knew about it, at that time the idea of a modular smartwatch sounded very attractive, but it was not clear that it could materialize.
During this year, its developers showed up at the CES in Las Vegas, but again, just with the idea, there was nothing concrete, until in June of this year, we had new news when they announced the adoption of Android platform and Qualcomm as Heart for the project. And today, after several news, finally the modular clock Blocks, is a reality.
There is no better example than Pebble, to show that innovative products have a proven success in Kickstarter, and Blocks wants to follow that path, as today started the funding campaign on the crowdfunding platform, with which they plan to launch this interesting Project, which on paper seems to be a new success and a new revolution.
Customization As A Flag
Blocks is one of the most attractive projects in terms of so-called smart watches, since its main attraction is to bring the possibility of customization according to the needs and specific moments of each consumer, this is achieved through a wide variety of Modules, which in turn form the device strap.
Everything is achieved through the heart of the clock, or “Core” as they call it, hence the magic and is where we will find a circular touch screen 1.35 inches color, with a resolution of 360 x 360 pixels, WiFi connectivity 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1, haptic response, voice control and notifications of our smartphone, in addition to being compatible with iOS or Android.
The specifications are complemented by Android as a platform, not Android Wear, but a modified version based on Lollipop, which has its own interface and mobile application to customize. In addition, we have a Snapdragon 400, 512MB in RAM, 4GB of storage and a battery of 400 mAh, which according to its creators, will grant us a autonomy of 36 hours.
The interesting part comes with the modules, which in this first stage we will have the possibility to choose between: additional battery, heart rate sensor, GPS, NFC for mobile payments or the “adventure” module consisting of temperature sensors, altitude and Pressure. In the second stage, modules for GSM SIM, fingerprint reader, notification LEDs and a programmable button will arrive, while in a third, and until the last stage, we will see the arrival of modules to incorporate a camera, sensor for the Air quality, sensor for stress levels and a module for Flash memory to increase storage.
All these modules, plus those that are coming up, can be purchased from the same store of the company, BLOCKStore, which we can access from the mobile app, or via the web. But the true potential of Blocks is its open platform, which will allow anyone to develop modules with all kinds of features, and thus have the clock that really fits our needs.
At the time of writing, the campaign is only 8 hours long and is about to reach $ 400,000 collected, thus exceeding the goal of $ 250,000, so everything seems to indicate that it will be a new success in Kickstarter, because still Have 36 days ahead.
If you want to buy modular smartwatch with camera, its price starts from $ 195 at TucsonSmartwatches.com, which includes only the Core and a classic silicone strap, but the true modular clock has a price, so far, $ 275, which will make us credit to Core and four modules to choose from the first stage. Its creators have mentioned that all acquire Blocks will receive their watch during the month of April 2016.
