Galaxy S7 vs Xiaomi Mi5: the Challenge According to Our Site

Are two of the most anticipated smartphones of this first half of the year, pending of course competition is going to get involved in these next few weeks. Two different approaches toXiaomi Mi 5 (Standard Edition) and Samsung Galaxy S7, related technologies but definitely more sophisticated solutions for the new top range Korean, and I speak not only of the finest materials. We’re not here to discuss that much on performance, over the limit of what one would normally expect on mobile, to make a difference were the little things: IP68 certification S7 who fears more liquids to the optimal camera back to Mi 5, despite a slim profile from just over 7 mm.

Design

Samsung worked fine to make the shell of this S7, I speak not only for the high quality materials, the back cover glass and metal profile, blend perfectly and Assembly do not let any weak point. The thing that I was most convinced are the lines, with the metal frame that flares at the bottom and top for a stylish design and special, different from ‘ usual smartphone squared ‘.

You can’t say the same about Mi 5, albeit both lighter than 23d compared to S7, pays a pledge in finishes not quite excellent and optimum ergonomics quite questionable. The metal frame, which curves as described a few seconds ago for S7 (with similar lines), is slightly wider towards the front of the display. To forget the home key by pressing it I always have a feeling of insecurity, or rather, an economic component that I could find on other devices category.

Display

Excellent for both panels, two different worlds but converging outcomes. Samsung has improved just enough so the display on the S7, an awesome 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution AMOLED display with a total area of 5.1 inches and a record luminosity: ben 855 nits, making it easily visible even in direct sunlight. The whites are very cold, people used to this technology is well aware of this, but you can always adapt to your needs by playing with the settings ‘ screen ‘ mode. The plus is obviously Always On, saves me countless keystrokes or tap on the display showing time, battery level, and other useful information, black pixels around are turned off and the consumption is very limited.

Xiaomi did a great job with his IPS LCD, which is also very bright, with excellent coverage of colour and viewing angles. Warm colors immediately put at ease your eyes and full HD resolution seems more than adequate. Distinguish the pixels between this Panel and to S7 just praised is almost impossible, so it is now that manufacturers will stop with this race at full resolution, the physical limits of our view were met!

Hardware

Not much to add to the reviews that we’ve done on the two terminals, which integrate the best available mobile chip. The performances are great, already know, never go on stress and especially do not heat: even after ten minutes in 4 k video recording to carry out tests of this video I never perceived abnormal temperatures. Stratospheric Scores on Antutu (131,540 114,771 for 5 points for S7 and I), but we knew that already, neither fear competition and S7 boasts that little extra edge thanks to 4 GB of RAM vs 3 of Mi 5.

I did not find any difference between the GPU: the Mali S7 T880 never misses a shot and the same goes for the best Adreno on piazza, 530 mounted on Snapdragon 820 and Mi 5. To test them I jumped straight to the title more challenging, Modern Combat 5: both are fluids as expected, maximum details and no slackening, a pleasure that only by top range you can wait.

Discreet audio speaker, both talking at the bottom, on the right side only one mountain, so it doesn’t block easily during gaming in landscape. Well the sound of S7, with highs and lows well balanced, on Mi 5 seems rather than perceiving a few highs and lower and medium, for an overall sound slightly darker.

Cameras

Great shots for both, but by day 5 surprise Me to prevail with its 16 Mp sensor, the level of detail is simply better and sharper images. Below the pictures and then the crop, where there is a clear majority deciding what. It must be said that when shooting, on time, the AMOLED display 2 k of S7 ‘ misleads ‘, I realized the difference only to PC.

S7 has the best shooting in HDR, very bright, with good coverage and well contrasted. Quite amazing how backlight can get similar details in the ‘ dark ‘ and the difference with Mi 5 here is clear:

In daytime is definitely the front camera of 5 to make Me the best self portraits, framed items are more defined and the level of detail and better. This in spite of an image sensor from only 4 Mp who carries out his duty but does not register good videos like on Galaxy S7 (here the front image sensor has 5 Mp), who loses as you saw a little bit in the shot of the so called selfie but gains (and not a little) as you move the front video.

Just cala brightness is S7 back into the Chair with its rear optical aperture F 1.7: the noise level is very low, realistic colors and items classified more defined, the same holds true if we use manual controls, much simpler and intuitive. Very good also the reduction of jitter, as mentioned in the video both have a optical stabilization system.

High quality video recording for both of us, you can’t possibly expect more in mobile, with 4 k resolution at 30 frames per second handled well both on Mi 5 ‘s on S7, the latter seems however a bit more fluid. At night prevails as the most faithful to the reality that reproduces colors said S7 and pushes the details thanks to optics very bright:

Pros and cons

Since we already know pretty well the terminals I wanted to focus on what are the pluses and pitfalls.

Especially useful the Wi-Fi hotspot that allows you to repeat the Wi-Fi signal and not just the one mobile phone, one thing that saves me time when I’m at airports or in the hotel and have to make long recordings to surf on other smartphones and PCs. The Game Laucher is one of those little attentions software that make you appreciate S7, with the small icons that opens up a whole range of useful settings to use when playing. A round of applause for the camera app, complete, clear and full of features. I like to take advantage of all this hardware to a timelapse or a slow motion, overall we can say that has an excellent interface in addition to photographic quality.

The protection against liquids and dust with the highest certification is perhaps the icing on the cake, the summer has just begun and you can have your smartphone at the pool or beach without fear of sketches has its value.

Among the cons of S7 I entered a biometric sensor on home button that always goes down, a quick step and recognition would be gratefully received. I expected a greater autonomy, maybe I stressed out too but I do not go beyond the 4 hours of screen turned on and when I ask more than they should arrive at the end of the day with some effort. I can’t complain too much, on the other hand Samsung made the Edge model for those with greatest needs in terms of battery life.

Really good the Mi 5, as mentioned above, a perfect demonstration that the full HD resolution can still be accepted in this category. Great brightness outside and the white point is well balanced. I was pleasantly surprised by the photographs of this device, optics has been well crafted 7.3 mm and is very bright, despite the well detailed and can offer noteworthy HDR photos. The MIUI 7.0, once broke the ice, appears as one of the most interesting, clean and tidy despite its lack of drawer. But we have to do a little hand.

I got the camera app, to access settings and other functions it is necessary to make a swype wheel icon and then press side, a bit too much for my liking, I much prefer the UI of S7, that of Sony or HTC. The home key, albeit boasting a biometric sensor, is too resistant to pressure, despite being almost flush. Pigiarlo is not a pleasure and Xiaomi could certainly make it better

Among the cons I also lack of GApp. Okay I just use Google Installer or put in the root of the device the latest GApp to have Play Store and main services such as Maps, YouTube, Gmail and it took at least 30 minutes for Chrome, but do everything, connect it to your PC, do some research online. Not to mention the anglo/Chinese keyboard to be replaced on the fly. I mean, if I buy a top range I demand that it is ready to use in 5 minutes, why I would advise to all those who consider themselves advanced users.

Conclusions

I wasn’t convinced in performing this comparison, these are two top range of their respective brands, but the price difference is still important and when we face the possibility of such a purchase I think the budget is the first thing. Anyway are two great expressions of this beginning 2016: on the one hand, to Mi 5, the long-awaited Snapdragon chip 820 and secondly, to S7, the powerful chip Exynos 8890. Curious point out that the first both quad-core and the second one octa-core, two very different approaches but virtually identical consumption if we limit the ratings to these two devices (both with 3000 mAh battery).

The good news is that the Galaxy S7 is rapidly coming down in price and is now more affordable if you always consider a purchase from 600 euros or so, to Xiaomi Mi 5 (we are always talking about the Standard Edition) you spend approximately 450 €. I expected something more from the latter, I have to admit, if the performances were excellent-except for a few second too long during loading on Chrome-Assembly, some of the materials and the finishes I’m not congenial. At least if I have to spend a similar amount, otherwise viro on amidrange with half the money.
